Confidence and Understanding the Problem

I remember being dumb enough to think that since I had a little bit of experience in standing in front of a church and talking (aka giving a sermon) that it would help me in preaching school.

Again, my mind was not thinking very maturely at that time. For I soon found out that many of the guys had had experience in pulpit preaching.

Sometimes we tend to be a bit naive about things. When it comes to confidence, sometimes even that can come from a sense of naivety!
That brings us to this week’s quote…
Confidence is the feeling you have before you really understand the problem. - Unknown
Have you ever been there? Had confidence in one area, but really you don't have much confidence. I have taken on some "fatherly" tasks that I have been naive before - simply looking at the directions before reading them!

When it comes to confidence we can have even more because we can all be here for each other. May we be trying to understand the problem so our confidence is not naive!

Problems That Resemble a Nail

Have you ever seen the cartoon where an object looks like a piece of literal meat? I remember the classic Tom & Jerry cartoons where there were scenes like that, where Jerry, the mouse, would have scenes when he looked like food, not just a menace, to Tom, the cat.

Along the same lines, if you've ever made the mistake of going grocery shopping when you are hungry, so many things start to seem appetizing. Everywhere you look, that item looks good, and that item looks good. Before long your cart is more full than you intended.

The same effect can take place when you look at problems in your life. That inspired this week's quote...

When the only tool you own is a hammer, every problem begins to resemble a nail.
~Abraham Maslow

When you have problems, especially those that tend to pile up on each other, the can have the same effect as shopping for food when you are hungry. You see that one item in your tool box is a hammer and you want to use it to solve all the situations you're entangled in.

The big problem can be to see that every problem doesn't resemble a nail. Not every problem needs to be hammered. Some may need to be glued with care. Some may need to be squeezed with pliers. Some may need to be tied with some rope. Problems don't all look like nails.

If you've got some problems lingering around (or when you do), don't go picking up hammers and swinging them around. Look for other tools in your toolbox to use. Or if you only have a hammer, go out and buy some new "tools" so that you do not have to use a hammer for every problem.

Solution or Problem?

Opinions are prevalent about most anything. Currently, ask someone about the gas prices and they will have an opinion about it. Ask about the government...there will be an opinion. Ask about your school...there will be an opinion. Ask about your church...there will be an opinion. There is nothing wrong with opinions, per se. What makes them create problems is when we don't use our opinions to create something positive, as a result. This quote makes me stop and think about what I'm doing with my opinions...
It doesn't matter how strong your opinions are. If you don't use your power for positive change, you are, indeed, part of the problem. ~ Coretta Scott King
Coretta Scott King, wife to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had to have a stressful life. Especially, as she was at the side of a man who was bold in making his "dream" become a reality. Not living in the 1960's, nor ever living in a place of racial segregation, I can only imagine what it must have been like to be her. Racial segregation definitely had, and continues to have, its fair share of opinions.

However, she played a part in using the energy, that formed her opinions, into action to help bring about change. That is where the application comes in to play. No matter what you have an opinion about, where can you be a part of the solution instead of the problem?

When you are thinking of all the things that need to be changed in a particular area, person, group of people, etc., turn it around and start thinking of ways in which you can help bringing those changes into a reality from a positive aspect.

Rethinking my thoughts...
